Stay engaged, connected, and well
Lifestyle & Community
Senior centers, faith communities, classes, travel, and ways to stay connected.
The single biggest predictor of cognitive decline isn't genetics or diet - it's isolation. Central Texas has an extraordinary bench of senior centers, faith communities, and lifelong-learning programs. Using them is medicine.
Retirement is not a destination. It's a decades-long chapter that works best with structure, community, and a few reasons to be somewhere on Tuesday morning.
What this covers
Senior activity centers
The City of Austin runs Lamar, Conley-Guerrero, and South Austin senior centers - free or low-cost classes, lunch, fitness, and trips. Williamson County has similar centers in Round Rock, Georgetown, and Cedar Park.
Faith communities
Central Texas is deeply anchored in church and synagogue life. Many congregations run senior fellowships, transportation, and caregiver ministries that quietly fill enormous gaps.
Lifelong learning
UT Austin's Senior University Georgetown (SUG) and Round Rock's Silver & Gold offer semester-long, non-credit courses taught by retired faculty. Waitlists exist for a reason.
Volunteer and mentoring
AGE of Central Texas, Meals on Wheels Central Texas, and dozens of school-mentoring programs actively recruit retirees. Purpose-driven volunteering is measurably protective against depression and cognitive decline.
The Central Texas angle
Sun City Texas in Georgetown is often what people move here for. But you don't need to move to Sun City - the same clubs, classes, and community exist in Austin proper, just distributed across more zip codes.
